How to get to Frutillar?

Frutillar is a charming lakeside town in southern Chile, nestled on the shores of Lake Llanquihue and surrounded by stunning views of the Osorno Volcano. Whether you're traveling from nearby cities like Puerto Montt or Osorno, arriving by plane, or even coming from Argentina, there are several ways to reach this cultural gem. Below, we share the main travel options and helpful tips to make your journey to Frutillar smooth and enjoyable.

From Puerto Montt (approx. 50 km)

  • By car: Take Route 5 to the Frutillar exit (well signposted). Here's the location of Frutillar’s main square, called Plaza Springer, as a reference point..
  • By local bus: There are multiple daily departures from the Puerto Montt Bus Terminal. These are blue buses that take the road passing through Puerto Varas, Llanquihue, and nearby towns. The trip can take longer as the bus stops at various local stops. For more details, check the Moovit app..
  • And Uber? This is an available option, but we don’t recommend it. It can be expensive and sometimes confusing due to the toll charged at the entrance to Frutillar.

From El Tepual Airport (Puerto Montt)

  • Domestic flights from Santiago or Concepciónare available through Sky Airline or LATAM Airlines
  • Ground transportationYou can take a transfer to the bus terminal or rent a car. We recommend arranging this in advance, as the airport is far from the city and has limited flight frequency, which means fewer transportation options.
  • Uber: From personal experience, we requested an Uber but had to wait a long time for the app to find available drivers.
  • Estimated travel time to Frutillar: around 1 hour

From Osorno (approx. 110 km)

  • By carTake Route 5 directly and then turn off toward Frutillar. You’ll only encounter one toll, near Purranque.
  • By bus: Several intercity bus companies make stops in Frutillar or connect via Puerto Varas.

From Bariloche, Argentina

  • By landCross through the Cardenal Samoré Pass → Osorno → Frutillar via Route 215. This is approximately 335 km, with an estimated time of 5 to 6 hours depending on border conditions.
  • Cruce Andino (Bus + Boat): A tourist route that connects Bariloche, Peulla, Petrohué, and Puerto Varas. From Puerto Varas, you can continue on to Frutillar.

Travel tips

  • The weather can change quickly: even if it's sunny, bring rain gear.
  • Avoid driving at night if you’re unfamiliar with the area (rural roads have limited lighting).
  • Ask the locals: Google Maps is helpful, but the people here are even more helpful!
  • There is a route on the edge Llanquihue's Lake you can take the route v-155. If you go by car from Puerto Montt enter the town of Llanquihue which runs along the shore of Lake Llanquihue.
  • And if you’re up for a small detour (about 40 extra minutes), take the Totoral junction and follow the road through Punta Larga. Highly recommended!
  • If you're coming from Puerto Montt or Osorno, tolls are inexpensive — nothing to worry about.
